In May 1997 Gary Kasparov, widely regarded as the greatest chess player the world has ever seen, played Deep Blue - a hulking one and a half ton IBM supercomputer. As it played out in the media, this was a chess tournament and scientific experiment that would question our dominance as the most intelligent entity on the planet.
